Frequently Asked Questions

  • Pelvic health refers to the well-being of the muscles, nerves, connective tissues, and blood vessels in the pelvic region. These structures play a crucial role in various functions like bladder and bowel control, sexual function, and providing support during pregnancy.

  • The pelvic floor muscles (PFM) are a group of muscles that create a hammock-like structure at the bottom of the pelvis, attaching front to back from the pubic bone to the tailbone and “sit bones.” These muscles make up the bottom portion of what is commonly referred to as your core. Your PFM are a small part of a much larger system. During your initial evaluation and ongoing assessment, we will examine your movement patterns from head to toe to identify global factors contributing to your pelvic floor dysfunction. Your treatment plan will include full-body interventions to optimize your pelvic health.

  • Absolutely! Telehealth physical therapy has proven to be highly effective in many cases. Through secure video calls, we can assess your condition, discuss symptoms, and demonstrate exercises—all from the comfort of your home. If hands-on interventions are necessary, we will teach you techniques and tools to perform on yourself or with the help of a trusted partner/friend/family member.

  • An average plan of care ranges from 6-12 follow-up visits, spread out over the course of 3-6 months. We usually start out with weekly visits, and decrease frequency as you progress.

You and your PT will work together as a team to create your individualized plan of care.

  • Your first appointment is all about getting to know you and understanding your pelvic health concerns. We'll start with a detailed conversation to discuss your medical history, symptoms, and goals.

Next, we'll perform a physical assessment, which may include checking your posture, movement patterns, strength, and mobility. Wear comfy/athletic clothing.

If you are being evaluated in-person, we may perform an internal assessment of your pelvic floor muscles. This helps us understand your unique needs and identify the source of your concerns.

Based on our discussion and assessment, we'll collaborate to create a personalized treatment plan that may involve exercises, lifestyle changes, and hands-on techniques. You'll leave with a clearer understanding of your condition and the steps we'll take together to improve your pelvic health.

  • Wear whatever makes you feel most comfortable! Keep in mind that you will be moving and performing exercises, so loose, comfortable clothing - like workout attire - is a good choice.
